Making Waves Foundation Successfully Completes their 23rd Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

This year, Skipper John Whitfeld reached a remarkable milestone with his 31st race, and long-time Making Waves volunteer and advocate Bridget Canham, who has been with the Foundation since day one, celebrated her 10th crossing. Both John and Bridget worked tirelessly, day and night, for months leading up to the campaign, giving up their time to ensure the yacht was fully prepared — from maintenance to provisioning food, and everything in between. Their dedication underpins the success and safety of every Making Waves campaign.

This year’s crew included an inspiring mix of participants: Jens Als, Jordan Berryman, Jeff Davis, Steve Grellis, Annie Lawrence, James Hunter, David Rieser, Kirsten Pollock, Amandine Schaeffer, two wheelchair users who together have clocked over 290 000 nautical miles, Jens Als with a silver medal in sailing for the 2000 Sydney Paralympics, and our youngest participant, and Kirsten Pollock, former Hansa World Champion. Brad Hoppen‑Wright of Passage graduate from Geelong and youngest in the fleet aged 18. Each crew member showcased resilience, teamwork, and courage, highlighting the Foundation’s mission to empower youth through sailing — particularly those living with disability, experiencing disadvantage, or disengaged from society.

We are also extremely grateful to have secured sponsorship for the first time since rebranding as the Making Waves Foundation. Thanks to the Primary Club of Australia and GILL Marine through Marine Plus the crew were fully equipped with offshore kits, onshore apparel, and lifejackets. Securing this funding allows more of our annual resources to be directed toward providing free sailing programs, ensuring that every young person we support can experience the confidence, skills, and joy that sailing provides.
