The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia proudly hosted the 7th Making Waves Regatta, featuring a thrilling day of sailing, lively entertainment (from our school group Canterbury Boys High School and The Royal Australian Navy Band), and inspiring stories from our Wright of Passage Participant Paddy with his Dad, Ben, and James Hunter, (volunteer and Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race participant) who learned to sail with blindness through the Making Waves Foundation highlighted the transformative power of sailing.
The day was set to be a success with 17 yachts racing (6 in div 1 and 11 in div 2), a steady 12-17 knots from the southeast and the rain holding off just in time for the races. TP52 ZEN took Line Honours. Thank you to all of the Skippers and crew for your boat donations and joining us to sail for disability. Whilst the racing was a success, even more successful was the fundraising to empower more youth living with a disability or experiencing disadvantage to learn to sail and navigate life’s challenges both on and off the water.
We were honoured to have several dignitaries and VIPs in attendance from 11 local sailing and yacht clubs. Thank you also to the volunteers on the day including 14 from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. A special mention goes to Daniel Small from AFLOAT Magazine, and our generous sponsors, including Viridity and Canterbury Leagues Club.
The success of the day raised funds to support 122 participants in Making Waves programs, helping to empower young people with disabilities and those experiencing disadvantage through transformative on-water experiences.
