A violent, unexpected storm battered the French Mediterranean island of Corsica on Thursday August 18th, killing at least six people. Two of the victims were killed when trees fell in campgrounds.

Hail, heavy rain and winds peaking at 120 knots swept the island.

A sailor captured the drama as the storm cell swept down on his yacht. The boat appears to be well prepared for the approaching storm front, with the tender tied down on deck and sails and dodger lashed. At first the video shows the yacht resting in relatively mild conditions with the engine running and anchored with 70 metres of chain laid out, according to the video’s author.

Soon the water ahead appears to boil as a violent downpour swiftly approaches, churning the water as it closes in.
