2020/21 Boating Hardware Sabre Sailing Assoc of Western Australia State Championship

The State Championship was held at Maylands Yacht Club for 2 Heats and PDSC held 4 Heats.

A good sized fleet of (25) lined up for the final 2 Heats Saturday 6th March 2021 at PDSC sailing in Matilda Bay.

The overall result came down to the final race, as the first 3 positions were on the line. Over the line in the final and last race was Tony Carr 1st Andrew Rose 2nd with Scott Olsen 3rd.

Final Overall Results:

  1. Tony Carr
  2. Scott Olsen
  3. Andrew Rose

Ladies State Championship Results:

  1. Heidi Miller
  2. Narelle Thomas
  3. Anne Gaunt

Andrew Rose a relative newcomer to the class has improved immensely. Another newcomer Jonas Nilsson from Sweden sailed consistently in the top ten. Old hand grand veteran sailor Bill Gillham finished 4th overall.

The fierce on water rivalry between Tony Carr (ex I14 National Champion) and Scott Olsen (past National and multiple State Sabre Champion) came to the fore, with Tony pipping Scott by 1 point overall with the improved Andrew Rose 3rd.

In the last 12 to 14 months it has been a bit of a disappointment in Tony Carr’s sailing world. Firstly last year driving hundreds of kilometres to get to Australian Sabre Championships in Wallaroo only to get stopped a third of the way by bushfires and unable to go any further.  And then due to COVID the cancellation of all sailing Australian titles.  Tony had a new boat built just before all of this and was on a strict training and diet routine.  But in his style true persistence pays off.

The Association held their first State Championship in 2011 and the State Championships have only majority be won by Scott Olsen or Steve Walters in one other year.

With an ever-increasing fleet size and a new club sailing Sabres. Sun City Yacht Club have recently purchased 4 boats.
