In 2018 the founders of Ocean Crusaders saw a need for major cleaning of the islands around Phuket and worked with Sunsail to organise the world’s first Clean Up Flotilla. COVID changed their plans this year but not their enthusiasm, and the Whitsundays was selected as the destination.

Whitsundays Clean Up Flotilla 2020Working with Sunsail Whitsundays, Whitsunday Rent a Yacht and Whitsunday Getaways, Ocean Crusaders pulled together a fleet of seven boats and 40 people who cleaned for five days and removed 2,200kg of rubbish from the south side of Shaw Island plus Border Island, Haslewood and Whitsunday Island.

People paid to either charter a vessel, brought their own, or came with an all-inclusive vessel with the group’s mission to give back on their time off – called Eco Voluntourism, a rapidly growing tourism sector where people make the choice to spend their holidays with like-minded people giving back to the world.

Next year’s Whitsunday Clean Up Flotilla will be in early November, due to the northerlies hitting the southern beaches. Keep an eye on the events pages at www.oceancrusaders.org for more details.
