The 2020 International Cadet Class National Championship, scheduled to be held this coming summer in Melbourne has been cancelled due to ongoing uncertainty resulting from the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The International Cadet Class of Australia (ICCA) has worked closely with the organising committee from the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) in making this difficult decision.

The decision was made after careful consideration of all aspects of organising and running a national standard event and the logistical challenges arising for competitors and their families from the current border restrictions.

There remains the potential for public health measures introduced to limit the spread of COVID19 to still be in place at the time of the event. This would significantly impact the ability for the host club to present the regatta experience for which the International Cadet Class is renowned.

“It has been a very difficult decision” said RYCV Rear Commodore Sailing, Jane Richards.

“Our primary concern is to keep our competitors and their families safe and to not compromise our commitment to delivering the highest standards and ensuring a fair outcome for all competitors.”

The ICCA intends to continue with the currently planned rotation of national championship through member states, with the 2021 championship to be hosted by a South Australian club.

ICCA President, Emma Hooper said “we know there will be considerable disappointment among the international Cadet family at hearing this news and Christmas/New Year will look very different for Cadet families in 2020. The intention of the ICCA is to bring the Cadet family together in early to mid-2021 and provide an opportunity for a national-level regatta that provides a focus for our sailors”.
