School Holiday Sailing Camps

10-Mar-2010
Yachting NSW in association with Concord & Ryde Sailing Club have organised School Holiday Sailing Camps for children aged 8 – 12.

The Camp, an initiative of the Yachting NSW Participation Committee, was first trialled at Concord & Ryde Sailing Club on the Parramatta River during the Christmas school holidays.

This trial was such a success that Yachting NSW has made the Holiday Camps a permanent program.

Following on from the success of the trial Concord & Ryde will be holding the next camp during the April/Easter school holidays, Tuesday 13th April – Friday 16th April 2010.

The 4 day course covers the Yachting Australia Get into Small Boat Sailing, Basic Skills 1 & 2 syllabus and all instructors are qualified under the Yachting Australia Instructor Program.

The increased participation of youth in sailing is a continuing focus for Yachting NSW programs now and into the future.

In addition to this the program has a twofold goal. The first of which is to provide clubs with a program that works with their members to utilise the facilities during school holidays. Many clubs are not currently maximising the possibilities available to them in regards to junior sail training. With the assistance of Yachting NSW clubs can see the idea of conducting junior sailing training turn into a reality. Further to this the Camps provide an opportunity for Clubs to employ their instructors through the holiday period.

By employing the youth of the club it has the ability to retain this key drop-out age in the sport. Retaining young adults in sailing has for many years been a significant problem. Through instructor training and the subsequent ability to gain employment in the sport young adults stay in sailing.

The next Yachting NSW School Holiday Sailing Camp will be conducted in the Easter holidays, April 12 – 16 at Concord & Ryde Sailing Club.
