ORCV Safety and Sea Survival Course

02-Aug-2010
The full and update/revalidation Safety and Sea Survival Courses are essential training for all offshore sailors.

The Ocean Racing Club of Victoria’s next SSSCs will commence on Sunday, September 19, 2010. Therefore, anyone intending to head South at Christmas for the first time or who is going to be out of date by then, please take heed.

The timing of the courses is also designed to ensure you are qualified for the Melbourne to Stanley race in October. Over the last few years, a great number of cruising enthusiasts have also partaken in the training, to ensure their own safety. No matter your reason for going, you would really want to get in first, as these highly sought after courses always sell out – fast!

Sailors are not the only ones to have found the course stimulating and enlightening. Shore crew have completed the requirements in the past and thereby gained a first-hand understanding of the safety requirements of offshore sailing and the search and rescue process, in the event of an emergency.

Now whilst at least 50% of the crew, including the skipper, when racing in a Category 1 and 2 shall hold a Safety and Sea Survival Course certificate of competence, the ORCV strongly recommends that all crewmembers undertake this course.

When undertaking the update/revalidation course, participants are asked to bring examples of procedures or experiences with them to improve the learning process for all, by encouraging discussion. If you’re unsure that you meet the eligibility criteria for the update/revalidation course, please review the information in the course notes on the site or contact the ORCV office on 03 9689 1622.

The courses are always a sell-out, so you will need to enroll quickly to secure your spot.
