eldén Furling systems for asymmetric spinnakers and cruising chutesSeldén Furling systems for asymmetric spinnakers and cruising chutes

For every sailor who is thrilled by boat speed in combination with fast and easy sail handling, Seldén GX is a new extra member of the crew. Unfurling an asymmetric spinnaker will give you instant gratification in terms of sailing performance and true sailing pleasure.

In light winds you can have the furled sail hoisted, ready for action. Once you are off the wind you simply release the furling line and pull on the sheet and the asymmetric spinnaker unfurls while you remain in the safety of the cockpit.

You can enjoy this type of sail from about 70° apparent wind angle and when sailing dead down wind you pole it out to windward, preferably with a telescopic whisker pole.
At the end of the day the furled sail is a neat, tight roll which is simple to bag and stows easily.

Hope Island Marina under new managementHope Island Marina under new management

Consolidated Properties’ Hope Island Marina is under new management, with local boaties and businessmen Keith and Ian Forbes taking the helm of the precinct.

The brothers, who are the owners of two boats, an apartment and multiple berths at Hope Island Marina, have a long-standing passion for the open water – having built their first kayak in their early teens, with Keith also having competed in TransPac sailing races.

Their new management role includes responsibility for the daily operation of the marina, with an emphasis on the short and long term rental of berths. Continued interest in the marina is expected from local boat owners as well as interstate and international travellers who see Hope Island as a great base for a south east Queensland stopover.

The Marina has sold out of its 15 metre and catamaran berths, with just one 12 metre berth remaining along with a handful of 14, 16 and 18 metre pens.

GME AISGME’s new products on display

The benefits of Australia’s GME’s soon to be released new range of small boat AIS (Automatic Identification Systems) solutions are well recognised and documented in the commercial marine environment with SOLAS vessels having Class A AIS equipment included as mandatory carriage for some years now.

Today leisure boaters can access the key attributes of AIS for a fraction of the cost through the introduction of Class B Transceiver and Receiver modules. Allowing vessels equipped with AIS to automatically share and update their position, speed, course and other information such as vessel identity with similarly equipped craft.

Position is derived from a GPS system, and communication between vessels is by VHF radio transmissions on channels specifically allocated within the normal marine VHF band. This is particularly applicable at night or in poor weather conditions such as heavy rain and squally conditions where radar would show only noise and clutter.
