3. The first allied submarine commander to be awarded the Victoria Cross for operations in the Dardanelles was Lieutenant Norman Holbrook, RN (B11) in December 1914. Lieutenant Commander Boyle (E14) received the Victoria Cross in May 1915, while Stoker (AE2) was awarded a DSO after the war when he returned from captivity by the Turks.
