It’s all ahead full for the 2008 Sydney International Boat Show, with more than 300 exhibitors packing the 28,000 square metres of the Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre will millions of dollars worth of boats, engines, marine electronics, fishing tackle and general boating accessories.
If that’s not enough to keep one occupied, another 70-plus exhibitors will be displaying in excess of 300 luxury craft on the adjoining marina in Cockle Bay, the largest complex of its type ever assembled specifically for an Australian boat show.
There are so many attractions scheduled for the show, the 20th staged, incidentally, at the Darling Harbour complex, it’s hard to know where to start.
Many old favourites return, none more favoured by anglers than the popular Yamaha Fishing Clinic, which regularly faces standing room-only audiences.
The daily fashion parades, the often humorous Boat Building Competition (staged on the Saturday of the show) and the Better Boating Workshop and Strictly Sail stages are other attractions generating plenty of interest.
Two remarkable young men could rightly be regarded as ‘star attractions’ on the Better Boating Workshop stage.
James Castrission, 25, and Justin Jones, 24, are the two adventurers who did the ‘unthinkable’ and crossed the wild Tasman Sea from NSW to New Zealand by kayak.
They will appear on stage, with their now legendary kayak, at 2pm and 5.30pm every day of the show excluding the Friday. On the Friday their only appearance will be at 7.30pm.
Another prime reason for boating enthusiasts to visit the Sydney International Boat Show will be the first NSW appearance of many of the winners in the recent Australian Marine Industry Federation Marine Awards, incorporating the annual Boats of the Year.
The Riviera 4400 Sport Yacht, named all-round Australian Boat of the Year, will be proudly displayed by the Gold Coast manufacturer on its impressive marina exhibit.
Stunning vessels from UK builder Princess and the famed Asian Grand Banks breed will also be displayed by Riviera.
Equally stunning and also hailing from the United Kingdom, the Chapman Marine Group will be showing the superb Fairline Targa 64 for the first time in Sydney.
Two other eagerly awaited vessels will also be making NSW debuts, the C60 Sports Cabriolet and the 500 Offshore Convertible, both from the award-winning company headed by industry legend Bill Barry-Cotter.
Of course, it’s not only glamorous (and expensive!) big boats that win awards; adding to the excitement of the Sydney International Boat Show will be the boats which scored category victories in the prestigious awards, among them first rate craft from Quintrex, Savage, Evolution, Stacer, Haines Hunter, Cruise Craft, Whittley and Haines Signature.

International Paint sponsors FireBug building
The boating industry is at risk of losing a traditional part of its history – amateur boat building. At International Paint we believe the best way to preserve the past is to protect the future by encouraging our youth to join our boating community and learn about the joys and rewards of life on the water.
One of the ways International is doing this is by sponsoring a group of teenagers from the Forster Neighbourhood Centre to build a FireBug sailing dinghy on their stand at the Sydney Boat Show.
The Forster Neighbourhood Centre (FNC) runs a variety of community projects including a boat building initiative for children at risk of leaving school early. Because boat building requires skills in both maths and English, the teens gain credits towards their school results whilst being motivated to complete their education. International Paint is donating the 2.4m FireBug to the centre to add to their current fleet of two. Their goal is to build six in total which will allow them to add youth sailing events to their impressive list of community support programs.
And you thought we just made paint …
